Districts in Kerala


Kerala ‘The God’s Own country’ is an enchantingly beautiful, emerald green land, flanked by the Western Ghats on one side, the Arabian Sea on the other, and strewn with rivers, lagoons, backwaters and rich vegetation. Kerala state have 14 districts, which are divided on the basis of geographical, historical and cultural similarities. The 14 districts are further divided into 21 revenue divisions, 14 District Panchayats, 63 taluks, 152 CD blocks, 1466 revenue villages, 999 Gram panchayats, 5 corporations and 60 municipalities. Some of the districts and their towns were renamed in 1990 like Thiruvananthapuram (formerly known as Trivandrum), Kollam (Quilon), Alappuzha (Alleppey), Thrissur (Trichur or Thirushivaperur), Palakkad (Palghat), Kozhikode (Calicut) and Kannur (Cannanore).The districts are grouped into three regional divisions, as being the part of Kerala historical Kingdoms of Kochi, Travancore and British Province of Malabar.

Districts in Kerala are grouped in three parts. The Malabar (North Kerala districts): Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikkode and Malappuram The Kochi region (Central Kerala districts): Palakkad, Thrissur and Eranakulam The Travancore (South Kerala districts): Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki.
